The Diploma in Remedial and Sports Massage course provides in-depth, practical tuition in both Remedial and Sports massage by building on Swedish massage methods - by introducing a wide range of highly effective new techniques.
These include:
• advanced consultation skills and appropriate safety checks
• assessment procedures to accurately identify conditions and injuries
• myofascial, neuromuscular and muscle energy techniques (MET)
• trigger point therapy
• proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF)
• stretching
• active, passive and resisted mobilisations
• joint and spinal mobilisation techniques
The treatment of many common disorders and injuries is covered along with a specific module dedicated specifically to Sports Event Massage - working with athletes in competition and training.
Further study in relevant Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology accompanies the extensive 'hands-on' sessions ensuring the student gains the necessary experience to practise successfully in both the remedial and sports fields.
The Diploma is a professionally accredited qualification - allowing the graduate to gain professional indemnity insurance and to go straight into practice as soon as they graduate.
The course is accredited by Glasgow Caledonian University and attracts:
60 credits at SCQF Level 8

The Western School’s thorough assessment processes ensure excellence among graduates and help earn the School’s unrivalled reputation.
As with many schools, award of the diploma is based on a process of continuous assessment throughout the course, but additionally, and very importantly, home exercises, final oral, written and practical examinations and the completion of formal case studies ensure that the graduate is fully prepared to enter the profession as a demonstrably highly-skilled therapist.
Access
The premises at GCU used for Western School courses have full disabled access. Additionally, the school has a commitment to working with students with special needs. A significant number of therapists who have graduated from the Western have done so despite challenges such as dyslexia and visual impairment.
Extras
Students can benefit from the strong relationships between the Western School and professional sports organisations. Everyone has a chance to work alongside the physiotherapists of teams like Glasgow Warriors and Glasgow Hawks in training and competition environments.
